HAM RADIO

From Dad’s very early childhood he was interested in anything electronic.  He built crystal controlled receivers and tinkered with old radios.  Eventually he got a good job at the Meck TV factory in Plymouth Indiana which required a 51 mile (one way) drive to work from our farm in Pipe Creek Township located about two miles north of Grissom Air Force Base near Bunker Hill.

Dad took that job to make enough money to keep the farm I grew up on running.  During this time he opened a TV/radio repair shop on our porch at the farm.  He was fascinated by Amateur radio and eventually acquired a license in about 1956.  His call sign was K9GPQ.

During this time I was also reading and learning about the hobby and finally took my exam in his TV shop which by now had moved to a new building in the town of Bunker Hill where they had moved after leaving the farm. My initial entry test was administered by Chuck Mays of Onward, Indiana.  His call sign is W9HST.

On May 12, 1958 the call sign of K9MNI was issued in my name. Some 50 years have passed and I still hold the same call sign.  This is the reason I chose www.k9mni.org  as the domain name for this website.

Most of my time is now spent with computers but I still have working stations on HF (10-80) and VHF (2 mtrs).
